Oluwatobiloba Dawodu, popularly known as Sir Dauda is the first signee and latest addition to the BAHD Guys Entertainment family. The talented singer, songwriter and instrumentalist, has dropped his debut 5-track EP titled “Love Ex Machina”.

“Love Ex Machina” houses his 2019 hit single ‘‘Landlord’’ and four new tracks including two features titled “Woman” and “Logba Logba” with chart-topping singers, Simi and GoodGirl LA. The production of the project is handled by A-List hitmakers such as Willis, Chillz, Sizzle PRO and Focus Ramon.

He was first introduced to the Nigerian music audience in 2012 with the release of his first single titled “Sisi Oloja”, which turned out to be a fan favourite and opened the door for a number of collaborations with other Nigerian acts including Show Dem Camp, Adekunle Gold, Blackmagic, Aramide, Loose Kaynon and Eva Aloridah.

Fans of Falz would have heard Dauda’s eclectic vocal performance on songs such as “How Far”, “Confirm” and “Boogie.” Speaking on the recent development, Falz described how elated he was to be able to work integrally with an artist whom he not only respects but also believes in.

Whenever Sir Dauda opens his mouth to sing, I am always in such awe of his talent and unmatched artistry. His pen game in the industry is unmatched so I am very blessed to have him on my team.

The genre of Sir Dauda’s music, “Jungle Funk” is a blend of poetry, folk and rap lyricism fused with African sounds and rhythms. His singles “Sisi Oloja” and “Landlord” were met with much critical acclaim and are indicative of the start of a new musical movement in Nigeria.

When asked about what he hopes his debut E.P. will accomplish, Sir Dauda said: “tell authentic stories.” In his words:

My sound is a blend of different styles and each track on the EP gives a very spiritual feel that fans would love and appreciate, so picking just one favourite track won’t be easy for them.

Having worked with big hitters in the Nigerian pop industry, Dauda has learned the importance of making music that is honest and in alignment with his truth.

As someone who was born in the 80s in the city of Lagos, with parents from mixed Nigerian heritage, I know the importance of art that compels through genuine storytelling. This is why with this project I follow in the footsteps of my influences (Bob Marley, Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Stevie Wonder, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Mos Def (Yasiin Bey), and Nas) to create a body of work that will be truly timeless.

An Overnight Protest at Alausa & Other Things Nigerians are Doing to Secure a Better Nigeria

You probably already know that Nigerians showed up en masse to the streets on Thursday, October 8, to protest the extrajudicial killings and assault by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Celebrities like RuntownFalzTiwa SavageWurlDDJ Spinall, together with Nigerians from all works of life showed up and demonstrated at the protests, demanding that the killings and assault stop.

What you probably didn’t know is that people stayed up all night at the Lagos State Government secretariat in Alausa, intent on having the government do something about the wanton abuse.

Here’s what been going on while we slept:

Twitter user @SavvyRinu who had previously shared that the governor’s Chief of Staff had assured the protection of protesters, around 9 PM, then shared that the police, led by the state’s commissioner of police Hakeem Odumosu, was towing away the vehicles of protesters and carting tents away too.

With the tents and canopies and chairs carted away, Nigerians stayed put, demanding that their voices be heard.

While protesters, including comedian Mr Macaroni, stayed put overnight, others were home working to secure their comfort, too.

Twitter user and food vendor @Mosopemi shared that she had a plan to prepare breakfast for 50 people. Quickly podcaster FK Abudu got to work raising funds, and, so far, over ₦500,000 has been raised, covering the breakfast and snacks for protesters.

People from different industries are also reaching out across their network, encouraging everyone to go out and join the protests. The abuse affects us all, they are saying.

There’s Hotels.ng boss Mark Essien enjoining tech CEOs to support the protests. There’s TV host Frank Edoho asking that Nigerian celebrities join in the fight.

Nigerians are also reaching out to international celebrities and media houses, hoping that their influence can force the government to make change. Cardi B, who has been mentioned by several Nigerians, replied to a tweet saying she would do her research.

And Lagos isn’t only where today’s protests are taking place. There are protests in Ibadan and Abuja. Nigerians everywhere are standing up for their rights.

See tweets about all that’s going on with the #EndSARS protests.

This Special Episode of “I Said What I Said” Podcast featuring Falz is the Energy We Desperately Need

By Feyikemi Abudu and Jola Ayeye, the “I Said What I Said” is a humour-laden socio-cultural commentary podcast.

Over the last few days, series of protests have been happening across the Nigerian and the world, against the extrajudicial brutality of the Nigerian police, particularly the “Special Anti Robbery Squad”, a unit who have used their state-sanctioned powers to kidnap, abuse, sexually assault, rob and harass Nigerians for many years with no consequences. No more.

In this special episode, we speak to Folarin Falana aka Falz, a rapper (and lawyer) who has a passion for social justice issues.

Jola says:

It was a pretty emotional episode but as usual, we let these jokes fly. You will notice that FK is not as prominent in the episode and that’s because while we were recording she was lobbying for the release of wrongly arrested protestors, raising and sending money and medical supplies to protesters across the country, a true queen.

Please make sure you play a part in supporting. From social media amplification to donating, to physically protesting. This is a once in a generation opportunity to do the right thing. Do the right thing.

Listen and enjoy (and learn!):

‘Fúnmilọ́lá Sanya: #BubuHasBeenABadBoy and Other Stories

$

For the first time in my life, I am proud to be a Nigerian. It’s a rarity, one I’ll tell my children.

This is how it happened: a tweet by @AfricaOfficial2 on the 3rd of October ignited the anger of Nigerian youths on Twitter. The tweet read: SARS just shot a young boy dead at Ughelli, Delta state as we speak. In front of Wetland hotels. They left him for dead on the roadside and drove away with the deceased Lexus jeep. I have videos…

Typical of the government, they denied it.

Festus Keyamo, the Minister of State of Labour said it was Operation Delta Safe and not SARS that was involved in the incident, that the victim fell out of the police vehicle when being taken to the station after an arrest, and that he was not shot. He even said the victim was alive. This is contrary to what the eye witness recorded on his phone. The footage indicates the victim was shot and his Lexus jeep driven—no, stolen.

This, brethren, was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Blood began to boil and fists were clenched. This would not just be death as usual; it was going to be the revival of the hashtag #EndSARS. Stirred by the outrage, some Nigerian youths, led by Twitter influencers Rinu Oduala and Debo Adebayo popularly known as Mr. Macaroni, went to the Lagos State Secretariat at Alausa, Ikeja, to protest the brutality of SARS, and artistes like Runtown, Falz and Paul Okoye of P-Square led the protest on the Island and blocked the Lekki Toll Gate. The turnout was massive. Of course, it was. Remember that ASUU is on strike and a lot of youths lost their jobs at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic? Now, ‘lazy Nigerian youths’ have more than enough time to protest.

Are you a Marlian? Eeya, shame on you. Your leader backed out of the protest. You’re not an active user of Twitter, eeya too o. Because if you’re getting your report about #EndSARS on Channels TV and Tinubu’s channel, you don’t know warris going on

Anyway, let me tell you my highlights of the #EndSARS protests, the moments that made me smile, and the ones that broke me:

  • First of all, there is no leader, there are only protesters, and as long as you are either on the protest ground or online tweeting #EndSARS, you are automatically an authority. The absence of a leader has made it difficult for the government to initiate negotiations and so the protest continues until SARS no longer exists.

  • There are amenities to support each protester. There is enough food to feed people, protesters are even eating jollof rice, asun, and small chops. Private security is on ground to protect people from thugs; there’s medical care to help the wounded, public defenders for the arrested, mental health services to help the traumatised, and even a charging station to charge phones.

  • If you are wondering how the above amenities were provided, it began when FK Abudu made a call on Twitter to provide food for the first set of protesters at Alausa. Before we could say jack, donations poured in, and even when CBN moved mad and blocked the account, people began to donate in bitcoins. What a generation! Let me now burst your brain, each naira is being accounted for, donations were made to families who lost their loved ones in the protests, and vehicles that got damaged by thugs were repaired. We have daily reports and updates on protesters who are arrested and those receiving medical care.

  • If we didn’t protest, I would never in a lifetime have known about deadly places like Akwuzu and Abbatoir. I read about these places and my tongue became unfamiliar with the taste of food. I must have fallen sick; my body ached in all the joints and sleep came in bouts. These places are known for butchering detainees without giving them a chance to prove their innocence – not that they were guilty in the first place sef. I still see the river behind Akwuzu where bodies are dumped in my dreams, and I can’t help but imagine how traumatised Chijioke‘s father must have been after SARS made him enter that river filled with corpses to search for the body of his murdered son.

The #EndSARS protests have unravelled a lot of despicable things; you could be on your way to the next street to buy fuel for your generator and in the next minute be in a van with monsters who have guns, never to be seen again. It has been terrifying and the silence from the government has been deafening.

There are so many things I want to say, but I want to give a shoutout to the 21-year-old lady who, on HipTV, said “Buhari has been a bad boy.” I hope she’s having a good time wherever she is. A bigger shoutout to the Feminist Coalition – a group of amazing women working to sustain the protests through crowdfunding. The biggest shoutout to all the protesters, to you who is raising your voice and fists on the protest ground, and to you who is retweeting the hashtag #EndSARS. May your strength never wane.

My parents have tales of how Nigeria used to be great in their time; my generation does not have that. But we are changing that and rejecting the status quo one step at a time. Let’s #EndSARS first, then we’ll face the lawmakers whose necks have been fattened with taxpayers’s money.

I’m overwhelmed. Every #EndSARS story I read awakens the angry cells in me. But I’m not tired. Tomorrow, I’ll wear my feminist t-shirt, carry my dad’s prayer bell, and head to the protest ground.

Franklin Ugobude: The Role Of Music In the #EndSARS Protests

$

It’s been two weeks since Nigerian youths began pouring out into the streets. Their one demand? That the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, infamously known as SARS, be scrapped. This squad, a unit of the Nigerian Police Force, was originally tasked with detaining and prosecuting those involved in crimes like armed robbery and kidnapping. Now, people are fed up and coming out to protest peacefully across the country because the unit has gone rogue. The goal is simple: scrap this unit and, in the long run, implement police reforms.

Across decades, SARS has become identified with a dark cloud of terror as a series of cases of extortion, torture, harassment and extra-judicial murder have moved from being faint rumbles to un-ignorable loud cracks deafening the populace. If you listen closely, you’ll hear a pushback, and it is soundtracked by shouts of defiance, angst & a slew of pop culture insertions.

The demands young Nigerians are making are nothing new. Since 2016, people have documented the abuse SARS has meted out. More often than not, these cases either get swept under the rug, or trigger imaginary overhauls announced by the government. Well, not anymore.

With more decentralised protests popping up across the map, we’re seeing a shift from regular chants to a mix of new slogans bellowed alongside popular tunes. It is safe to say that Nigerian music is playing a pivotal role in the fight against SARS for these young people. It is reminiscent of the way the Black Lives Matter movement became intertwined with Kendrick Lamar’s prophetic chants of We gon’ be alright from his 2015 “To Pimp a Butterfly” album.

One of the songs that has gotten massive airplay and may be referred to as the unofficial anthem is Davido’s “Fem.” The song was released almost a month ago, after the musician, who has been vocal about the protests, ended a social media break. The song became an instant hit, especially as it was speculated to be some form of broadside delivered at Burna Boy, who, ironically, had a protest-ready anthem, “Monsters You Made,” snubbed over his perceived reluctance to align with the protests initially.

With lyrics like E be like you don dey talk too much, Small talk you don dey talk who talk that can be addressed to the Nigerian government and its empty promises on the SARS menace, “Fem” has become a crowd favourite complete with the hand signalling a “shut up your mouth” when it is being played. There’s a viral video of the Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, addressing protesters in Alausa (his seat of office), only to be silenced by the song blasted by a DJ and the frenzied crowd shouting and gesturing fem at him.

Asides “Fem,” another song that has been a constant feature at these protests is “Barawo” by Afrobeats duo, Ajebo Hustlers. Originally released in July, the catchy tune talks about jungle justice, corruption and police brutality—all huge protest themes. It is also very timely that in the heat of the protests, Davido joined his voice to a remix of this song, consciously re-sounding lines like The masses they para cos raba no dey and This country na wa to the ears of listeners.

Burna Boy’s “Monster You Made,” with Coldplay’s Chris Martin, from the allegedly Grammy-bait “Twice as Tall” album, has fallen foul of the crowds because it seemed his position as a conscious artist was more fumes than flame at the onset of the protests. However, with recent developments, including him adding his voice to the protests online and mounting billboards in town, his song has crawled back to be part of some of the peaceful protests, mostly for the Calling me a monster, just ’cause we said no way, no way, no way… we are the monsters you made lyrics.

While all of these are going on, there’s a litany of very conscious classics making waves with the protests. These include African China’s “Mr President,” Eedris Abdulkareem’s “Jaga Jaga,” Asa’s “Jailer,” Falz’s cover of Childish Gambino’s “This is Nigeria” and a host of other songs by Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Each of these songs has found a way to spur on protesters who are committed to not backing down until their needs are met.

Ultimately, the protests are a reality Nigeria must accept. The revolution may not be televised, as Gil Scott-Heron foretold, but Nigerian youth will keep expressing themselves precisely how they know to, with music being smack in the centre of things. It may be noisy to some, apt to others, but it will go on until the government realises it’s not dictating the tune anymore.
